The 'Pure Brut' from Pol Roger is an exceptional cuvee that displays incredible finesse and minerality. The newest addition to complete the Pol Roger range of champagnes, this cuvée is above all an exercise in the House style, seeking to craft a wine in its most natural state without the addition of any sweetening dosage.
Low or Zero Dosage Champagnes are very fashionable at the moment, but can be extremely difficult to get right. So to make a wine with no sugar and to entitle it 'Pure' is courageous indeed. Pol Roger, it should come as no great surprise to learn, have risen to their own challenge, and have done so with considerable aplomb. The key seems to be to stick with the winning formula, in terms of grape varieties, namely a third each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, but to select from specific (perhaps warmer) vineyards and to age for a little longer thereby engendering a natural softening. Spicy, with notes of crushed apple, broiche and peach stones, this is a very successful wine. With no dosage to mask it, the purity of fruit aromatics and flavours is impressive. On the nose it displays lifted white floral and citrus aromatics with a vibrant, clean palate of minerality and depth. A perfect match for any seafoods.
"I never expected that it would be simply, the best Brut Nature that I have ever tasted. It is aptly named "Pure" because it has great purity of fruit which boasts both precision and sumptuousness. My hat comes off to Pol Roger for producing such a great and delightful Champagne." - Tom Stevenson, Christies and Sotheby's Wine Encyclopaedias, April 2008
